I'm over 16 and I haven't written a sonata or changed the entire scope of physics or cut off my own ear. I might as well just die now.

After you get a doctorate, PhD is at the end of your name forever--but not just when you're doing things that pertain to your field of study, no. When you're cooking, you're still a doctor. If you write a book, you'll automatically get a second look from browsers because you have a doctorate. It means respect in every walk of life afterwards. At least, in situations where all anyone has to go on is your name. Your name without that PhD, and you could be anyone. You could have never finished High School.

However, put letters at the end, and you could write a book about the astrological consequences of bunnies in the greater Chicagoland area, and be taken semi-seriously. People would buy it.
